Walvis Bay Backyard Tenants Group Seeks Additional Land to Accommodate Growing Membership

Community Events

On 19 March 2023, Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes and members of the municipal council updated the town’s backyard tenants on upcoming land allocation plans. During a meeting, Forbes announced that a two-week registration process would begin in April to assess the number of backyard tenants needing land. Officials will visit homes in the Kuisebmond and Narraville areas, documenting house numbers and the number of tenants at each location. Forbes emphasized that land distribution would be fair, aiming to avoid favoritism and ensure a diverse allocation.

The initial phase will involve relocating 50 residents to Farm 37 outside Walvis Bay. Forbes explained that these residents had previously received occupation certificates from the central government in 2020, alongside 50 residents from Otweya informal settlement. He assured that this initial move would serve as a model for future phases, with gradual expansions in services at Farm 37.

Attendees of the meeting expressed satisfaction with the information provided. Tenant Ehafo Ndengu appreciated the clarity, noting that it would help prevent misunderstandings and protests. Tenant Ndamono Magano highlighted the urgent need for this plan, stressing that many have been waiting for years for proper housing solutions.
